Recently I had the pleasure of attending a networking event with a keynote speaker who focused on Personal Development. I won’t delve too deep into the contents of his presentation (that’s another post entirely) but it centered around those thoughts in our minds which bring negativity, cause stress and ultimately, hold us back.

I’ve always considered myself to be a relatively confident person – I don’t mind talking to people or trying new things but the presentation made me think about all the times I was the opposite – all those times I had said no.

How many opportunities had I let pass me by because of the fear of what might go wrong? How often had I made a mountain from a molehill in my mind? Where would I be now if I hadn’t stopped to consider the opinions of others?

“When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened” – Winston Churchill

So I spent some time looking into this, I got online to find out how to change the way I was looking at these key decisions in my life.

There is some truly great content online from a number of Change trainers and coaches, but one which really stood out for me was Brendon Burchard, a high performance coach from the US who’s video ‘How To Reprogram Your Mind (for Positive Thinking)’ can be found below.

It got me thinking about the things in my life that I’m holding back on, the things I haven’t done yet through an artificial fear of what might go wrong. The launch of this blog was a symbol of me overcoming that exact paradox in my mind. This was an idea I had had in my head for at least 6 months prior to launch, an idea that I put off whilst I focused on all the barriers in my way. Once I decided it was time to say yes and grab the opportunity with both hands, it took me 8 hours to get everything online.

It took me 6 months to overcome the hurdles of something which took me 8 hours to implement. How crazy is that?

From all those things that I thought might go wrong, so far, none of them have!…And from the way I’m now working to look at things, none of them will go wrong in the future – that’s the new, positive approach I’m going for!

Now we’re all human, we can’t be in 5th gear all day, every day – sometimes when you look outside and it’s raining, you’re stuck in traffic or your boss is being a bit of an ass, you need a pick me up!

So here’s one of my favourite motivational videos, a short 3 minute clip that gives me the boost I need when the world is trying it’s hardest to get me down…

So, what’s stopping you reaching your potential?

Is it the fear of failure, the thoughts of others or the artificial barriers you put between you and your success?

It’s time to move those thoughts aside and do the things you’ve always wanted to – if I can do it, you sure can too!
